What is Coaching?
Coaching helps a person reach success & satisfaction quicker than if done alone.
Simply, coaching is a process to assist a person to reach success and satisfaction in various areas of life quicker and more smoothly than if done alone. These areas include, but limited to, business, relationships, parenting, health, and general happiness.
However, if you want to know the general structure of how this is done, don't look in a dictionary! The dictionary defines "coach", as it applies to people, in two ways
- A person who gives instruction, as in singing or acting
- Private tutor employed to prepare a student for an exam.
According to both of these definition the root the word coach is related to the "coach" of a train, that carries passengers to their destinations on the train's own tracks. It follows then that the "dictionary definition" coach takes a dominant and leading position to instruct and assist a client to get to a destination according to the way the coach understands things.
Coaching today is almost entirely different.
You are unique, your aspirations are unique, and therefore the path that you will take to reach your desires is also unique. The coach therefore doesn't push the client along a track that the coach feels is good.
The coach listens carefully and intently to what you say, provides insights, suggestions and advice, encourages, motivates, helps to focus on what needs to be done, and helps you along your path.
You are the world's greatest expert of yourself. The coach asks powerful questions to identify who you truly are and what you really want. Only after this is done does the coach provide new insights and offer suggestions and advice. Since he is here only to help you, you can either reject or accept those suggestions and advice. After you form a plan the coach encourages, motivates, prods, and assists you until you reach far beyond your original goal.
